Vital Interets, National Security Become Foremost Priorities: Musharraf

Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf reassured the nation on Thursday that Pakistan, its vital interests and national security were the foremost priorities of the government.

Musharraf expressed the view in his message to the nation on the occasion of "Pakistan Solidarity Day" being observed on September 27.

"The whole world is watching us as we stand at the crossroad of history," he said.

"Therefore, we have to conduct ourselves in such a manner that we depict ourselves as a united and disciplined nation," Musharraf said.

Unfortunately for the past couple of years, he said, some elements were exploiting the people for their vested interests. They were inciting the innocent people on the basis of parochial, ethnic, regional, sectarian and local prejudices, for the cause of meaningless sacrifices.

Musharraf said at this critical juncture of history, the supreme interests of the country demand transcending the tides of emotional sentiments and acting prudently.

He called for forging unity by setting aside all prejudices, egoism and petty expediencies and supporting the correct, positive and sagacious stand with one voice.

"As we belong to a civilized society, we cannot even think of supporting, encouraging or indulging in brutal and coercive acts," he added.
