Result of Election for Macao's New Legislative Assembly

The Association for New Democratic Macao led by Ng Kuok Cheong was at the head of the poll in Sunday's election for the Second Legislative Assembly (LA) of China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), according to the final official result.

The association obtained 16,961 out of a total of 83,644 votes, a general assessing committee from the Macao Procuratorates announced here Wednesday, after examining and re-calculating all the votes.

Ten out of 96 candidates running for direct election have been listed as members of the Second LA, including Ng Kuok Cheong, Kwan Tsui Hang and Leong Hang Teng.

And ten other candidates standing for indirect election, including President of the First LA Susana Chou, will all become new LA members on behalf of the walks of employer, employee, professional and welfare, culture, education and sports.

Out of the 20 elected people, 13 are members of the current LA.

In line with the Basic Law, the Second LA shall be composed of 27 seats including ten from direct election, ten from indirect election and seven appointed by the SAR's chief executive.

The assessing committee said that 52.34 percent of the registered voters cast their votes Sunday.

The voting aroused great concern as the first LA election since Macao returned to the motherland at the end of 1999.
