US President Modifies Itinerary of Asia Trip Next Month

US President George W. Bush will attend the informal leadership meeting of the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum scheduled to be held in China's Shanghai on October 20-21 but has canceled other stops of his first Asia trip, the White House said Tuesday.

"President Bush has modified his planned travel to Asia in October," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said in a statement.

Without giving an explanation, Fleischer said Bush postponed his scheduled stops at Tokyo, Seoul and Beijing.

In a meeting with visiting Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi at the White House earlier Tuesday, Bush reportedly told Koizumi that it could be "difficult" for him to travel to Japan next month.
