Top Chinese legislator Li Peng said that once China enters the World Trade Organization (WTO) it will formulate and amend laws in line with WTO requirements so as to better adapt itself to the international community.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, made the remark Tuesday afternoon in a meeting with Jacques Hermann, president of the Danish Supreme Court, and his party.

Li noted that since China and Denmark forged diplomatic ties, bilateral relations have witnessed rapid development, and currently bilateral friendly cooperation is growing soundly in various fields.

He pointed to the beginning of bilateral judicial contacts, saying that although China and Denmark have different social systems and judicial operations, bilateral judicial exchanges are imperative and good for both sides.

He said Hermann's visit to China is bound to further bilateral judicial exchanges and cooperation, especially between the two supreme courts, and so will contribute to the development of bilateral friendly ties.

Li pointed out that China pays much attention to exchanges with foreign countries in its reform and opening-up drive, and China's legislative and judiciary work should not only be based on its own conditions, but also from experience of other countries.

He said he hoped that Hermann would conduct more exchanges with his Chinese counterparts and relay the Danish experience to the Chinese.

Li also briefed the visitors on China's people's congress system and democratic and legal building, and answered their questions.

Hermann said he was delighted to have this opportunity to visit China to witness China's economic progress and the building of its legal system.

The Danish guests are here at the invitation of China's Supreme People's Court. They are also scheduled to visit Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province.
