Zimbabwe, Britain to Resume Good RelationsNewly appointed British High Commissioner to Zimbabwe Brian Donnelly said Monday Britain and Zimbabwe should resume their good relations.Speaking to reporters after an introductory visit to Zimbabwean Vice President Simon Muzenda, Donnelly said the good relations would only be realized if the Abuja Agreement on the land issue was implemented. "Britain wants the Abuja Agreement to work and this will be a basis to establish good relations which traditionally have always been there between the two countries," he said, adding: "I think that the friendliness is still there even though there are political differences." At a meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria, early this month, Britain agreed to fund the fast track resettlement program in Zimbabwe by compensating white commercial farms whose land was designated for resettlement. Donnelly called on the Zimbabwean government to be flexible on the issue of citizenship if Britons could not meet the deadline of January next year, saying that there could be practical differences during the process. Zimbabwe is calling on those residing in Zimbabwe to renounce dual citizenship and become citizens of a single country. |
