US Detains 352 in Probe into Terror Attacks

US law enforcement agencies have detained 352 people in the investigation into the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US, Attorney General John Ashcroft said Monday.

Testifying before the House Judiciary Committee, Ashcroft said that the Federal Bureau of Investigation wanted to detain 392 more people who remained at large and who may have helpful information in the probe.

"The investigative has yielded 324 searches, 103 court orders, 3,410 subpoenas, and the potential tips are still coming in to the Web site and the 1-800 hotline. The Web site has received almost 80,000 potential tips; the hotline, almost 15,000," Ashcroft said in details.

"The investigation into the acts of September 11 is ongoing, moving aggressively forward," he said.

Ashcroft urged Congress to quickly approve a legislative package, outlined by him after the terror attacks, that would broaden law enforcement surveillance powers and ease restrictions on the ability of authorities to detain or deport suspected alien terrorists.
