Rare Chinese Stamp Auctioned for US$217,000

A rare stamp issued in the 19th century during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) was auctioned for 1.8 million yuan (about US$217,000) on Monday in this capital of Jiangsu Province.

The stamp, called a "One-Yuan Red Revenue Surcharged Small Issue", was collected by an American philatelist named Finegan in 1915.

There are only 32 such stamps in existence in the world.

In 1937, the stamp was auctioned in London. In 1986, it was acquired by Chinese stamp expert Huang Jianbin.
