Sri Lanka Supports US War Against Terrorism

Sri Lanka said Monday that it is willing to extend assistance to the United States in its war against global terrorism following the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington earlier this month.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that details for the assistance will be worked out through mutual consultations.

"In response to a request from the US government for assistance in the context of the recent terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, the Government of Sri Lanka has already indicated to the US state department its unhesitating willingness to extend to the US government all such assistance as may be requested to combat terrorism," the statement said.

It said that the international community needs to be aware of the linkages of terrorist groups and concerted, cooperative efforts are needed to dismantle terrorist networks.

It called for the universal interdiction of the international financing networks of terrorist groups. Fund raising activities on foreign soil through charitable funds must be effectively countered, the statement said.

It emphasized United Nations central role in devising collective measures to ensure that perpetrators of terrorism do not find safe haven in any part of the world and are brought to justice.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels have been fighting against government forces in the north and east of the country since 1983 to establish an independent Tamil homeland there.

The LTTE was outlawed by the US as one of the foreign terrorist organizations in October 1997.
