Iraq Denies Involvement in Anti-US Terror Attacks

Baghdad did not have any connection with the terror attacks in New York and Washington on September 11, Iraq's minister of culture said on Sunday.

"We have no connection (with the attacks on the U.S.) whatsoever," Hamed Yussef Humadi said in an interview with Xinhua.

"I would assume that if we had any connection, they (the U.S.) would not hesitate to announce it, and do everything in their power to punish and bomb Iraq," Humadi said.

Both U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Colin Powell have said that no link has been found between Iraq and the terror attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the Iraqi official said.

But Humadi did not rule out the possibility that Iraq might be dragged into a war with the U.S. and said that Iraq is prepared for such a war as it has been doing in the past 11 years.

Three hijacked passenger planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington on September 11, leaving more than 6,000 people missing and presumed dead.

Iraq has since denied any role in the attacks.
