Israel Issues Arrest Warrant for Palestinian Fatah Leader

The Israeli Justice Ministry issued on Sunday an arrest warrant for Marwan Barghouti, senior leader of the Palestinian mainstream Fatah movement, the website of the leading Hebrew daily Yediote Aharonot reported.

The ministry sent the arrest warrant to the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) through a Jerusalem court, demanding that the PNA deliver the Fatah's general secretary in the West Bank to Israeli judicial authority for investigation, the report said.

Barghouti is accused of being involved in some "terror attacks" against Israel in the one-year-old conflicts between the Israelis and Palestinians, which have left nearly 800 people dead, mostly Palestinians.

The 41-year-old leader of Fatah's military wing of Tanzim escaped an Israeli attack on August 5 when his convoy was struck by two Israeli missiles.
