Beijing Charity Concert for Handicapped, Poor Children

A charity concert was staged Sunday in Beijing for more than 1,100 handicapped and poor children.

This was the third such concert jointly organized by the China Charity Federation (CCF) and the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Co. Ltd. (HSBC), to honor those from local welfare institutes and schools for handicapped and poor children in Beijing.

The performers included children from well-known children' artistic troupes in Beijing, as well as those from local handicapped schools.

According to the CCF, China has always cared about the welfare of children, especially the healthy growth of the disadvantaged group.

The CCF has for years extended a helping hand to orphans, and handicapped and poor children.

The HSBC has delivered large amounts of donations to children's welfare institutes throughout China, and co-hosted, with the CCF, the charity concert for three consecutive years.

The HSBC Charity Fund, founded in 1981, has so far donated a total of 25 million yuan (about three million U.S. dollars) to China's charity sector. In 2000, the HSBC cooperated with the CCF to give training programs to laid-off workers, which helped 2,000 people find new jobs.
