Exchanges Among Int'l Science Parks On Increase

The building of a network among international science and technology parks will help various countries and regions to share resources, complement each other and realize common prosperity in their development of new and high-tech industries, Chinese and overseas experts said Sunday in Suzhou.

At the Forum on Cooperation among Science and Technology Industrial Parks in the Asia-Pacific Region in the 21st Century held here as part of the 4th APEC Technomart, experts highly praised the important role of the APEC network of science and technology parks in exchanging experiences and information among such parks in the Asia-Pacific region.

They held that exchanges among international parks tend to be on sharp increase.

Science and technology parks of APEC members have been developing fairly rapidly, and over the past 20 years half of the world's new parks have been located in this region.

There are over 450 science and technology parks in the Asia-Pacific region, with the United States, Japan, Australia and some other countries and regions at the top of the list.

In November 1996, Chinese President Jiang Zemin suggested on behalf of the Chinese government that APEC set up a network of science and technology parks, which sparked immediate interest among APEC members.

In September 1997, the first meeting of the network was held in Beijing, marking the official launching of the cooperative organization.

Kong Deyong, team leader of experts in high-tech zones under the Ministry of Science and Technology, said that the Asia-Pacific region includes both developed and developing economies. From the point of view of profits, clients and rationalized use of resources, cooperation among places with different levels of development is beneficial for all parties involved.

As a result, reinforced cooperation among Asia-Pacific parks will benefit the development of science and technology, economy and society in the whole region.

The building of the network has expanded the room for Chinese high-tech parks to open wider to the outside world and increase international cooperation. So far, China has opened 10 of its parks to APEC member economies.

President of the Association for International Parks Klaus H. Plate said that in the 21st Century international cooperation will be the essential way for economic development, and cooperation among parks is one of the important patterns of cooperation.

Therefore, it is necessary to set up cooperation platforms like the APEC network of parks.
