Chinese Claim Men and Women's Doubles at Badminton China GP

World runners-up Zhang Jiewen and Wei Yili of China clinched their second international title Sunday in Ningbo by beating compatriots Huang Nanyan and Yang Wei 3-1 in the women's doubles final at the 225,000 US dollars Youngor Super Badminton China Grand Prix.

Zhang and Wei, who won the event at Singapore Open in August, overpowered world number two Huang and Yang, title holders of South Korea Open and Malaysia Open this season, 8-6, 7-3, 6-8, 8-7.

"We came here to win the match, and we did it by a good teamwork," said 19-year-old Zhang.

Zhang and Wei, a young and promising pair who trained together two years ago, came out strong when they swept the first two games with powerful smashes and quick pacing.

There was a hiccup when they gave up the third game by blowing a 6-3 lead. But after saving one game point at 7-6, Zhang and Wei came back to turn the table, winning the game and the match in 56 minutes. "We did our best today, but our rivals performed better," said the 22-year-old Yang.

Newly formed Chinese pair Liu Yong and Chen Ling claimed their first ever title together here Saturday when they brushed aside Danish due Michael Sogaard and Rikke Olsen in straight sets to win the mixed doubles.

China Claim Men's Doubles Title

China's world number four pair Zhang Jun and Zhang Wei took their first title this season after outgunning compatriots Liu Yong and Chen Qiqiu in straight sets to win the men's doubles title at the 225,000 US dollars Youngor Super Badminton China Grand Prix Sunday in Ningbo.

It's a final between China's top two pairs when Zhang Jun and Zhang Wei smashed their teammates Liu and Chen 7-1, 4-7, 8-6, 4-7 and 7-5.

The Chinese dominated the final of the men's doubles, the weakest event of the Chinese badminton in the recent decade, for the first time in an international event this season. It took three years for the Chinese men's double players to be ranked top two after they did it in 1998 Swiss Open.

"We know each other very well, so the match turned out to be a tough one, " said 24-yeal-old Zhang Wei.

"Zhang Wei made lot of chances for me in front of the net, I should thank him for winning the title," Zhang Jun added.

Asked for their comments on the new seven points system, Zhang Wei said: "The new system was a little more favorable for us, leaving more chances for our powerful attacking."

"Our opponents were lucky at big point in the match, " Chinese team captain Liu Yong said of their loss.

Zhang Jun and Zhang Wei, paired together three years ago, got a flying start when they finished the first game at 7-1 with ease. Then the match went into a see-saw one and the two pairs shared the top four games.

In the deciding game, Zhang Jun and Zhang Wei led all the way to win the game at 7-5 and the match.

It's third title for hosts China in the tournament. Earlier on Sunday, newly-paired Liu Yong and Chen Ling and Zhang Jiewen and Wei Yili won the mixed doubles and women's doubles events.
