Ethiopia-Djibouti Railway to Be Renovated

The number of Ethiopia- Djibouti railway users is expected to increase from 600,000 per year to 1 million after the completion of its rehabilitation in the year of 2004, local media reported Sunday.

The rehabilitation of the railway which was built more than 50 years ago, has attracted, following a tender issued by the railway authorities last June, four international consultants from South Africa, Britain, Germany and France.

The winning consultant, which is expected to be announced at the end of this year, will conduct a six-month study to prepare and invite competent contractors for the rehabilitation program.

In addition to the improvement of train speed and safety for passengers, the authorities intend to rehabilitate about a 112-kilometer long railway line and a number of bridges.

The project will be conducted with a grant of some 30 million US dollars donated by the European Union.
