U.S. Secretary of State Holds Talks With Visiting Chinese FM

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan agreed Friday to cooperate in fighting terrorism.

During a luncheon meeting, Powell expressed thanks to China for its support for America's effort in combating terrorism, and reaffirmed that the United States wants to promote exchanges and cooperation with China and other countries in the field of anti- terrorism.

Both agreed to hold expert-level consultations on anti-terrorism and said that similar consultations will also be held at the U.N. Security Council.

The two also discussed preparations for U.S. President George W. Bush's visit to China in fall.

President Bush is looking forward to his visit to China and hopes to see better U.S.-China relations after the visit, said Powell.

During the talks, Tang elaborated on China's stand on the Taiwan issue and expressed the hope that the U.S. side will deal with the issue strategically and from a long-term perspective.

The United States understands the importance and sensitivity of the issue, Powell said. He reaffirmed that the United States will stick to its "one China policy" and will abide by the three joint communiques signed between the United States and China.

They also agreed to hold a human rights dialogue.
