Leaders Send Birthday Greetings to Centenarian Mathematician

On behalf of Chinese top leaders Jiang Zemin, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan and Li Lanqing, secretary of the Shanghai municipal committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Huang Ju paid a visit to Su Buqing, a well- known mathematician, Friday.

Su, who turns 100 years old on September 23, is now in Huadong Hospital for medical treatment.

Huang conveyed the leaders' congratulation to Su on his birthday and brought him floral baskets from the leaders.

A native of Pingyang, Zhejiang Province, Su went to study in Japan when he was young and received a doctorate of science in 1931.

In 1931, Su returned to China and was employed by the mathematics department of Zhejiang University, in Hangzhou, the provincial capital. He is known for his breakthroughs in the research of geometry.
