Rumors on Terrorists in HK Dispelled

Hong Hong's Deputy Secretary for Security Timothy Tong dispelled rumors that terrorists have sneaked into Hong Kong and that the police have made arrests on September 21.

Referring to press reports claiming that the police had detained one or more Arabs in connection with their investigation into terrorist activities and that the police had received a terrorists' list, Tong said these reports had no factual basis.

"Based on information available to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government (HKSARG) so far, nothing suggests that terrorists linked to the US attacks are now in the territory, ready to spring into action, or that they are possibly coming our way," Tong said.

"We have a wide information network that covers not only the police but also relevant agencies, including contacts local and overseas," Tong said.

"However, we will never be complacent and will remain vigilant at all times. Like other governments, the HKSARG treats terrorist activities as a matter of prime concern. The police have stepped up security, where appropriate, to ensure public safety. They are maintaining close contact with their counterparts all over the world. Should anything untoward happen, the police will be there, ready to react," Tong said.

He added that Hong Kong had an effective immigration control system that could bar the entry of undesirable elements.

"At present, foreign nationals from 40 countries need a visa to come to Hong Kong. But even for those foreign nationals who may come visa-free, they are subject to stringent checks by immigration officials should the latter have cause for concern about their entry," Tong said.
