Religious Sector in South China Shun Falun Gong

Religious people from Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong Province, Friday visited a photo exhibition displaying grisly incidents triggered by Falun Gong.

In a later discussion of the show, they expressed their support for the government's decision to crack down on the cult.

Guang Ming, vice-president of the local Buddhist Association said Li Hongzhi, the leader of Falun Gong, has stolen words from Buddhist writings to fabricate his own cult, which has offended true Buddhist followers and tarnished the religion.

He said the "spiritual poison" of a cult is more harmful than heroin and other lethal drugs, and the true nature of Li and his cult should be revealed to the world.

Liu Lingsi, a Catholic priest, said every social group has the responsibility to act in the best interests of society. But Falun Gong has bewitched its practitioners, some of whom have committed suicide or murder, and it violates the religious doctrine of respect for life.

More than 30,000 visitors have seen the exhibition since it opened September 13.
