HK Releases Employment, Vacancy Statistics for June 2001

Overall employment in Hong Kong increased slightly in June 2001 over a year earlier, according to the government's figures released on September 21.

The Census and Statistics Department statistics showed increases were recorded in most industry sectors, except the manufacturing sector and the civil service.

However, vacancies fell considerably in overall terms over the same period. More significant decreases in vacancies were observed in the wholesale, retail and import/export trades, restaurants and hotels sector, and the financing, insurance, real estate and business services sector.

In June 2001, the wholesale, retail and import/export trades, restaurants and hotels sector employed 1,034,900 persons, accounting for the largest employment share in the economy. It was followed by the financing, insurance, real estate and business services sector, with an employment size of 442,500; the community, social and personal services sector, 372,500; the manufacturing sector, 218,700; and the transport, storage and communications sector, 185,900. In addition, there were 80,300 manual workers at construction sites.

On a year-on-year comparison, the rate of increase in employment in June 2001 was more distinct in the community, social and personal services sector, the financing, insurance, real estate and business services sector, and the transport, storage and communications sector. However, employment in the manufacturing sector continued to shrink.

Compared with a year earlier, vacancies decreased significantly in June 2001 in almost all the sectors surveyed, except the community, social and personal services sector and the civil service. Taking all the sectors surveyed together, there were around 28,600 vacancies in June 2001, and of which, 25,700 vacancies were in the private sector and 2,900 vacancies in the civil service.
