Japanese PM To Visit US Next Week

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi will visit the US next week to hold talks with US President George W. Bush over last week's terrorist attacks in Washington and New York, governmental officials said.

The prime minister will leave Japan for the US next Monday and stop in New York before meeting Bush in Washington next Tuesday, the officials said.

Koizumi will return to Tokyo next Wednesday afternoon, according to these officials.

During his meeting with Bush, Koizumi is expected to express Japan's support for a possible US military retaliation strike and reaffirm Japan's security alliance with the US, the officials said.

The Japanese prime minister is also expected to discuss a seven- point plan in which Japan would dispatch its Self-Defense Forces to provide logistical support to the US forces in the event of a retaliatory strike.

The plan was brought about by Japan's ruling coalition on Wednesday.

In order to carry out the plan smoothly, the Japanese government also eyes a new legislation, which is to be submitted to the next extraordinary Diet (parliament) session next week.
