Philippine Dengue Fever Claims 114 Lives Since January

Dengue fever that is rampaging in the Philippines has killed 114 people since January this year, the Philippine Department of Health (DOH) said on September 21.

The DOH announced that the reported incidence of dengue so far this year is at about 14,620 cases, and most of the victims are children under 10 years old, the ABS-CBN on-line news reported on September 21.

However, the numbers this year are still way below the 35,000 recorded in the 1998 Dengue epidemic, and a downward trend in hospital admission was observed in most regions of the country, Health Secretary Manuel N. Dayrit was quoted as saying.

However, the health chief urged the public not to be complacent and continue their best efforts to contain the disease.
