No Military Support for US in Fight Against Terror, Mexico Says

Mexico said Thursday that it will not join in any American military action against terrorist organizations responsible for last week's terror attacks on New York and Washington, and will only give political and diplomatic support.

Mexico will not participate in any action in which military forces are involved and will not join in Washington's or the United Nations' fight against terror militarily, Foreign Minister Jorge Castaneda told local radio.

He said Mexico will only back the fight against terrorism politically and diplomatically in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations' General Assembly and Security Council.

On the possible U.S. strikes against Afghanistan, Castaneda said ordinary people in Afghanistan had nothing to do with the terror attacks on the United States and that they should not become victims of any U.S. retaliatory action.

Even if other Latin American countries agreed to give military support to the United States at Friday's meeting of the Inter- American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance, Mexico will stand by its own stance, Castaneda said.

He said the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance was outmoded and should be superseded by a new security system.

The treaty was signed on September 2, 1947, by members of the Organization of American States.
