Sri Lanka Turns to Natural Gas to Overcome Power CrisisSri Lanka, which is undergoing a severe power crisis and is compelled to impose an islandwide eight hour power cut, has decided to implement natural gas power generation projects.The state-owned Daily News quoted Friday Minister of Power Anuruddha Ratwatte as saying foreign investors will be involved in these projects. A cabinet sub-committee has been appointed to evaluate proposals submitted by foreign companies, which include those from Australia, Middle East and Malaysia. The Australian company has agreed to install 350 MW natural gas power plants with an installed capacity of 1050 MW within a nine month period. It will also convert existing thermal power plants into natural gas power plants under the same project. Meanwhile, The Island newspaper reported that with increasing rain falling in the hydro catchment areas the Ceylon Electricity Board has decided to reduce the power cut hours from Friday. |
