Japanese Police on Alert to Prevent Terrorist Attacks

The Japanese National Police Agency (NPA) announced on Friday that it has ordered its police forces across the country to be on alert to prevent terrorist attacks.

"Preventing terrorism is one of the main tasks of security police," NPA chief Setsuo Tanaka said at a meeting participated by security department chiefs of the local police forces.

He also called for tightening security for the planned visit to Japan by U.S. President George W. Bush next month.

"There is no precedence in which the president of a foreign country has visited Japan in such a tense international situation, " Tanaka said.

Japanese police have tightened security around some 350 U.S. facilities in Japan since the deadly terrorist attacks in the United States last week, he added.
