China Develops AC Transmission Electric Locomotives

An alternating-current electric locomotive solely developed by China made its debut Friday in Hunan Province. central China.

It is significant for the country to change its power cars drawn by direct-current to those by AC, experts said.

The locomotive was developed by Liu Youmei, a member of the Academy of Engineering of China, and engineers from Zhuzhou Electric Locomotives Factory and the local Research Institution for Electric Locomotives.

Tests show the locomotive can run up to 200 kilometers per hour. The AC power cars are expected to be put in trial operation between Zhengzhou, central Henan Province, and neighboring Wuchang, Hubei Province, in October.

After the trial operation, the locomotives will be put into operation on more routes.
