China Holds Int'l Mid-Sized, Small Businesses ExpoThe 2001 China International Exposition for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises opened Thursday in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province in east China.A total of 433 domestic and overseas enterprises showcase more than 5,000 varieties of products at trade fair, which has also attracted trade delegations, chambers of commerce and government organizations from around the world. Apart from new product exhibitions and trade talks, a series of seminars on the development of small and medium-sized enterprises will also be held during the exposition, an annual top-level trade fair China launched in 1996. Total foreign trade deals clinched in the previous five expositions reached 350 million U.S. dollars, with domestic trade deals valued at two billion yuan (241 million U.S. dollars). Small and medium-sized enterprises play an increasingly important role in China's social and economic development. They make 60 percent of China's export earnings every year. Changzhou is a booming city with a population of three million. Small and mid-sized firms account for 98 percent of the total number of enterprises in the city. |
