Mubarak, Arafat Hold Talks on Mideast SituationEgyptian President Hosni Mubarak Wednesday morning held talks with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on the current Mideast situation at Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.Arafat's visit to Egypt came as he announced Tuesday that he was unilaterally enforcing a ceasefire, and Israel responded by ordering a halt to military operations. The Palestinian leader, who arrived in Egypt earlier in the day, has left Sharm el-Sheikh after his brief visit, Egypt's state-run MENA news agency reported without giving further details. Arafat, a frequent visitor to Egypt, is expected to travel on to Amman for talks with Jordanian King Abdullah II over the Mideast situation. Egypt and Jordan, the only two Arab states that have signed peace treaty with Israel, have been active peace mediators between Israel and its Arab neighbors. |
