Iran Denies Support of Possible US Strike on AfghanistanIran has strongly denied a report issued by a Canadian daily saying the Islamic republic will support a possible US military assault on Afghanistan following last Tuesday's terror attacks in New York and Washington.The Tehran Times newspaper on Wednesday quoted Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi as denying the report carried by Canada's National Post. The report alleged that Iran has, via Canada, sent a message to the U.S. government saying it would not oppose targeted military strikes against those believed to be responsible for the tragedy. Canadian Foreign Minister John Manley has also denied the report, according to Tehran Times. Meanwhile, the Iranian hard-line daily quoted another Foreign Ministry official as saying that Iran does not consider the U.S. administration's campaign against terrorism to be legitimate. The United Nations would be the best suited to such a campaign against terrorism, the official said. The U.S. has singled out Osama bin Laden, an exiled Saudi billionaire in Afghanistan, as the prime suspect of the terror attacks. The U.S., which accuses the Afghan Taliban regime of sheltering bin Laden, has vowed to root out his group and attack countries or organizations that support him. |
