Bush Annouces a Donation Internet SiteU.S. President Bush made a speech at a Rose Garden ceremony Tuesday to thank rescuers and announce an Internet site to collect donations for stricken families. "We saw a great country rise up to help. Americans' love for America was channeled through our nation's great charities," Bush said. "As president of this great land, nothing made me more proud."Earlier, Bush joined 300 White House employees on the South Lawn to observe a moment of silence exactly one week after the deadliest terrorist attack ever against America. Across the country, radio stations marked the time with patriotic songs. Bush said Americans could use a special Web site to make donations and "figure out where to send food, where to donate blood, where to give clothes" and how to best devote their time. "May God continue to bless America," Bush said after the moment of silence. After he left, some of his staff stretched the silence for a while longer, until 8:48 a.m. ET, the moment of the first impact in Manhattan. |
