Li Peng Meets President of Burundi National AssemblyLi said that the peoples of China and Burundi have maintained a long-term friendship despite big changes in the international and domestic situations since the two countries resumed diplomatic relations three decades ago. Li expressed appreciation for Burundi's adherence to the "one China" policy and its support for China's stand on such issues as human rights. He reiterated that China is in support of the trend toward multi-polarity in the world and economic globalization, adding that China has always maintained brother-like friendship with African nations and other developing countries. Li said China is pleased to see that the peace process in Burundi is progressing in a positive direction. He expressed the hope that Burundi will end civil war through peaceful negotiations and realize social stability and a good livelihood of the people. Li pointed out that China appreciates the efforts that the international community, including Burundi and some other African countries, have made to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflicts in Congo (Kinshasa). He said that China is in support of the United Nations to conduct peace keeping activities in Congo ( Kinshasa). He said that as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will continue to play a conducive role in pushing for an early resolution of the issue of Congo (Kinshasa) and the great lake region. Li emphasized that strengthening parliamentary exchanges and cooperation will have great significance for the development of bilateral relations between China and Burundi. He said that the NPC of China is ready to expand exchanges and cooperation with the National Assembly of Burundi so as to deepen mutual understanding and enhance friendship between the two peoples. Li also briefed the guests about the progress of the Tenth Five- Year Plan that China is carrying out at present. Ngendakumana thanked the Chinese side for its invitation and warm reception. He said that they are impressed with the great achievements China has made in economic development. He thanked China for its unconditional help to Burundi during hard times and China's assistance to Burundi's development. He reiterated Burundi's stand on adhering to the "one China" policy and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. He also congratulated China on winning the right to host the 2008 Olympic Games. He said he hopes that the two countries will continue to expand cooperation in technology, rural development and other fields. |
