What Lies Difference of Average Living Space between China and Advanced Countries

In recent years, China has seen a rapid growth in housing construction, the average floor space for each urban household witnessing a fast increase, but compared with that of developed countries, China still lags a bit far behind.

According to statistics, at the beginning of 1990s, the average floor space in developed countries is, for example: America, 60 square meters; Britain, 38 square meters; Germany, 38 square meters; France, 37 square meters and Japan, 31 square meters.

According to a data of analysis on floor space in different countries, the average floor space for low-income countries is about 8 square meters, low and medium-income countries at 17.6 square meters. However, the medium-income countries see an average of 20.1 square meters while medium and high-income countries averages 29.3 square meters and 46.6 square meters for high-income countries.

By the end of last year, the floor space per household in China averaged 20.4 square meters, just at the level of medium-income countries. Judging by the experience of other countries the needs for more housing will keep a robust growth when the average floor space reaches 30 to 35 square meters/per capita, According to sources in the Ministry of Construction.
