At Least 201 Dead, 5422 Mssing Reported in World Trade Center Disaster

The number of people missing in the terrorist attacks on the twin towers of the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York rose to 5,422, New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Monday.

There was an increase of 325 reported missing in the seventh day of the rescue and recovery work following the collapse of the towers on the morning of September 11. The figure given by Giuliani on Saturday was 5,097.

The latest confirmed deaths were 201, with 133 bodies identified, Giuliani added. They represented a surge of 19 and 18 respectively.

No survivors have been found since Wednesday. The mayor called for preparing to accept the reality that "we're not going to recover a significant number of people."

Two highjacked passenger planes slammed the 110-story towers Tuesday, leaving thousands feared dead.

The disaster was part of four terrorist attacks the same day, in which the western end of Pentagon in Washington was damaged by a similar plane crash, in addition to a crash in western Pennsylvania.

All 266 people on board the planes were killed, plus 189 missing in the Pentagon attack.
