Chinese Parliament Concerned over Water Pollution in Three GorgesThe National People's Congress (NPC), the Chinese parliament, has shown great concern over water pollution in the Three Gorges Area, where China's largest hydropower project is under construction and a major river-water diversion project is also being planned.The area strides Hubei Province and Chongqing Municipality. Recently, Vice-Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee Zou Jiahua and Member of the NPC Standing Committee Zhang Haoruo led two separate groups to study the situation in the two places. The control of water pollution is directly linked to the Three Gorges Dam Project and the water diversion project, Zou told local people in Hubei. He called for greater attention to dealing with water pollution in this central China province. China may encounter a severe water crisis if the country fails to tackle the problem of water pollution in the area, he noted. The two NPC inspection groups urged the local governments of Hubei and Chongqing to build more sewage plants and garbage treatment facilities, so as to reduce discharges of pollution into local rivers, especially the Yangtze River. |
