Iranian President Calls for International Fight Against TerrorismIranian President Mohammad Khatami on Monday called for an "organized, coordinated and wise international fight against terrorism."Any campaign against terrorism "cannot be based on hasty or emotional reactions," Khatami said in a letter, carried by the Islamic Republic News Agency, to U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan following the terror attacks in New York and Washington last Tuesday. "Terrorism should be eradicated through reasonable and fundamental efforts by all countries in the world," he stressed. Khatami expressed regret that "the most violent and most savage terrorist attack" was launched against the United States in the year of "dialog among civilizations." Such attacks would give rise to clashes of civilizations and cultures and will hinder the process of dialog at national and international levels, lamented Iran's reformist president, who advocates the widely acclaimed dialogs among civilizations. Terrorism is the common problem in the world that threatens world peace, freedom, spirituality, science and coexistence, Khatami said. Over the past few days, Iranian leaders strongly condemned the attacks, in an unprecedented show of sympathy for the U.S., which has described Tehran's statement as "rather positive." |
