Iraq Offers Condolences to Terror Attack Victims in US
For the first time since last week's terror attacks in the U.S., Iraq on Tuesday voiced condolences to the American victims.
In a telegram to Kathy Kelly, one of the leaders of the U.S. anti-embargo group Voices in the Wilderness, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz expressed his "sincere condolences" for the victims of last Tuesday's attacks on New York and Washington.
"Through you, I express my sincere condolences to the families of the victims, notably the American citizens who have expressed their solidarity with the Iraqi people," Aziz said in the telegram carried by the official Iraqi News Agency.
This was the first gesture of consolation from Baghdad ever since the terror attacks, which are feared to have caused more than 5,000 casualties.
The Chicago-based Voices in the Wilderness has dispatched dozens of delegations to embargo-stricken Iraq to protest the sanctions and show solidarity with the Iraqi people.
Iraq has been under sweeping international sanctions for its 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
