HK Reports 2nd Quarter GNP at 40 Billion US Dollars

Hong Kong's Gross National Product (GNP) for the second quarter of 2001 was estimated at 310.3 billion Hong Kong dollars (39.8 billion US dollars) at current market prices, according to the Census and Statistics Department.

It was 1.3 percent lower in money terms than a year earlier and came after a 1.4 percent increase in the first quarter. After netting out the effect of price changes, GNP fell by 0.9 percent in real terms in the second quarter from a year earlier, following a 3.2 percent increase in the first quarter.

For the first half of 2001 as a whole, GNP was still 1.1 percent higher in real terms than a year earlier.
