Cross-Straits Symposium in Commemoration of "September 18 Incident"

More than 150 people from China's mainland, Taiwan and the United States gathered in Shenyang Tuesday morning to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the "September 18 Incident."

On September 18, 1931, Japanese militarists deliberately created the "September 18 Incident" at Liutiaohu near Shenyang, capital of Liaoning Province, and subsequently invaded and occupied northeast China.

Addressing the Cross-Straits Symposium in Commemoration of the "September 18 Incident," Wen Shizhen, secretary of the Liaoning Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, said that to mark the incident is to look back into history, cherish the memories of the heroes and martyrs, and appeal for peace.

Wen said the Japanese imperialists committed countless crimes in its aggression of China, calling on compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Straits to be cautious of the revival of the Japanese militarism, to safeguard world peace and to prevent the historical tragedy from being repeated.

Liang Su-rung, chairman of Taiwan's Strait Peaceful Reunification Association, said that people should never forget the humiliation inflicted on the Chinese nation.

He said, in Taiwan today, there is still a small number of people who insist they are not Chinese, adding: "I feel painful for that."

He also called on Japan to profoundly introspect its war crimes and say sorry to China.

Other attendees expressed the hope the motherland will be reunified and be prosperous and strong forever.

The symposium is sponsored by the People's Government of Shenyang.
