International Cooperation Benefits ShanghaiShanghai, east China's commercial and industrial powerhouse, has benefited from its scientific and technological cooperation with international institutions, said a source from the city's science commission.Shanghai-based universities, research bodies and enterprises signed some 1,000 joint projects with overseas institutions during the past year, bringing over 100 million U.S. dollars of overseas investment. A private enterprise, uplifted by a French institution, has developed a pesticide that sells well in the international market. Overseas-invested hi-tech enterprises here applied for over 1,000 patents and yielded some 12 billion U.S. dollars of industrial output last year. Universities and research bodies here have also reported positive results from cooperation with their overseas counterparts, as more researches have proved successful, with more papers published. Meanwhile, sci-tech cooperation has helped boost the city's overall development. A feasibility study carried out with the Netherlands has provided more practical solutions to traffic jams on the city's viaducts. In another development, a visual conference call between Shanghai and the U.S. Silicon Valley has provided a forum for face-to-face communication between Chinese and U.S. scientists, who have held discussions on venture capital, bio-medicine and software development. Statistics show that Shanghai is presently cooperating with over 40 countries and regions in energy, environment, agriculture, new material, software and communication sectors.
