Putin, CIS Presidents Coordinate Anti-Terrorist Cooperation

Russian President Vladimir Putin held telephone conversations Monday with presidents of several countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to push ahead with their countries' interaction in combating terrorism, said the Kremlin press service.

During Putin's conversation with Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, the two discussed the international situation following the terror attacks against the U.S., and pledged to make coordinated efforts to fighting international terrorism. Kuchma also briefed Putin on the results of a recent EU-Ukraine summit.

Then, Putin and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev " exchanged opinions about the developments in the international situation, possible joint steps to counteract terrorism, including working out decisions at charter organs of the Commonwealth of Independent States," said the press service.

With Kyzgyz President Askar Akayev, Putin discussed the situation developing in Central Asia and in the entire world following the terrorist acts in the United States last week, and considered joint CIS actions in fighting against international terrorism.

Vladimir Putin and President of Azerbaijan Geidar Aliyev agreed that coordination in the struggle against the international terrorist threat must be effected both on a bilateral basis and within the frame of the commonwealth as a whole. They also touched upon questions of regional security and prospects for deepening the cooperation in this aspect among Caucasian countries.

"Possible steps within the frame of the Commonwealth of Independent States to counter international terrorism" topped the agenda of Vladimir Putin's conversation with President of Turkmenistan Saparmurat Niyazov, said the press service.

The two presidents discussed in particular "the active use of mechanisms of consultations and the working out of joint decisions within the frame of meetings of the CIS statutory bodies."

Putin and Uzbek President Islam Karimov, Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov talked over the situation in Central Asia and the coordination of CIS activities in the fight against the international terrorist threat.

On the same day, Vladimir Putin sent Russian Security Council Secretary Vladimir Rushailo on a working tour of the Central Asian states. Rushailo will meet with the leaders of these states on the situation in Central Asia and Afghanistan, and exchange views on ways to upgrade the effectiveness of CIS cooperation in the struggle against international terrorism and in ensuring mutual and general security.
