Police Chief: Resorting to Int'l Co-op to Fight Int'l Terrorism
China has always insisted on combating international terrorism and called upon the whole international community to conduct sincere, good-will and effective cooperation to eliminate the conditions that allow international terrorism to develop, said Jia Chunwang, Minster of Public Security, Monday in Beijing.
He also proposed that cooperation should be strengthened to combat transnational crimes while emphasis should be put on combating international terrorist activities, serious economic crimes and illegal immigration.
Jia made the remarks while addressing the Symposium on ASEM Law Enforcement Organs Cooperation in Combating Transnational Crime, which opened here today.
He said the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11 have not only brought disasters to the American people, but also challenged the sincere desire for peace of all people in the world.
Jia pointed out that the reaction to this tragic incident demonstrates once again the urgency and importance of strengthening dialogue, extending cooperation and jointly combating international terrorist activities and other transnational crimes.
With the acceleration of economic globalization, the globalization of crime is becoming a prominent trend, which seriously affects political stability and economic and social developments in all countries, he said.
"No country in the world can avoid the detrimental effects of transnational crimes nor can any country combat transnational crimes all by itself. Enhancing international cooperation in combating transnational crimes has become a common view of the international community," he stressed.
Jia pointed out that strengthening ASEM law enforcement cooperation is of vital significance to the prevention and suppression of transnational crimes as well as the maintenance of peace and stability in Asia and Europe as well as the world.
It is learned that in recent years, China has taken an active role in Interpol and the United Nations law enforcement multilateral cooperation and has signed bilateral and multilateral treaties on law enforcement cooperation with many other countries, which fully demonstrates the positive role of the Chinese police in international police affairs.
"China has actively participated in relevant international anti- terrorism treaties and sincerely fulfills its duties. A series of domestic measures have been taken in the prevention and fight against domestic terrorist violence and positive results have been achieved to contain, prevent and suppress transnational terrorism, " he said.
According to sources with the Ministry of Public Security, about 200 delegates from 10 Asian countries and 15 European Union (EU) member countries are attending the symposium. The Chinese delegation consists of officers from administrations such as the Ministry of Public Security, the Foreign Ministry, the Supreme People's Procuratorate, the Ministry of Justice as well as the Hong Kong and Macao Police.
During the three-day symposium, participants will exchange views and study counter-measures and mechanisms for cooperation in combating transnational crimes.
