Spokesman Dismisses Reports on Terrorist Attacks in HK

A spokesman for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government said Monday there was no substance in speculative reports that Hong Kong had become the target of terrorist attacks and there was no cause for panic.

Some local media reports said earlier that there was a possibility that once the United States launches a war against countries which harbor terrorist groups, terrorists hiding in the Macao Special Administrative Region will launch retaliative attacks against the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong.

"The Hong Kong police force are closely monitoring the situation and will take appropriate measures to protect public safety," the SAR spokesman said.

He confirmed that the government had been in close contact with the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong, but there was no cause for alarm whatsoever.

"Hong Kong remains a highly safe and secure city. Measures will be taken to ensure the safety of U.S citizens and U.S. interests in Hong Kong where necessary," he added.
