First Chinese Awarded WWF's Top MedalQu Geping, a leading official in China's environmental protection cause, has been recently awarded the "The Duke of Edinburgh Conservation Medal" by the World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF)".Qu, chairman of the Environmental and Resources Protection Committee of the National People's Congress, became the first Chinese to receive the top award in the WWF, the world's largest NGO with a total number of five million members. Qu returned to Beijing from Seville, Spain, Sunday, where the WWF held the award ceremony on September 11. The WWF gave the award to Qu "in recognition of his role in the Development of environmental protection in China." In the early 1970s, the then Chinese premier Zhou Enlai hand-picked Qu as a leader to initiate China's environmental protection cause. He has since held a series of important positions in environmental protection and made great efforts and achievements in the field. |
