France Call for European Judicial, Police Cooperation in Fighting Terrorism

French Minister of European Affairs Pierre Moscovici said Monday that European nations should accelerate judicial procedures and expand police cooperation in fighting terrorism.

"We have been considering the development of a European Justice system with a European Police, a European public prosecutors' office and information exchanging capacities," said Moscovici at French television France 2.

"All this should be greatly accelerated now. The formidable event (terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11) is a sign of alarm and a starting point for Europe," said the minister on the eve of a meeting that will group magistrates and police chiefs specialized in anti-terrorist actions from four European nations Monday noon in Brussels.

Magistrates and police chiefs from France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands will gather to discuss investigations that are going on in each of their countries on the terrorists who had planned the attacks against New York and Washington last Tuesday.
