Slow-Moving Typhoon Kills 16 in TaiwanA slow-moving typhoon pounded Taiwan on Monday, killing at least 16 people and causing serious flooding in Taipei. Most of the victims either drowned in floods, or were killed in mudslides, an official with the Fire Administration's disaster response center. Eight people were missing and 58 people were injured. The eye of the Typhoon Nari, packing maximum sustained winds of up to 53 miles per hour, was 18 miles northeast-east of central Taichung at 0300 GMT, an official with the weather bureau said. Nari, which means lily in Korean, forced the closure of Taiwan's financial markets. Air flights were suspended, canceled or postponed. Nari was weakening but the northern and eastern parts of the island were still under its influence as it moved southwest at 3.72 miles per hour.
