Art Show of Ethnic Groups Expects More Ticket SalesOrganizers of the Second National Joint Art Show by Ethnic Minority Groups, which opened in Beijing Saturday night, are expecting to sell more tickets to the public so as to cover the cost of the event. The event consists of 42 shows highlighting the various art forms of China's 56 minority ethnic groups and 80 percent of the tickets are planned to be sold to the public, according to Li Yusheng, an official with the event's organizing committee. The central authorities appropriated a total of 10 million yuan (some 1.2 million U.S. dollars) for the event, but it's still less than the total cost of the event. The organizers expect tickets sales to help make up the difference. Twenty years ago, few people bought tickets to watch art shows as performance activities had not been commercialized at that time in China, said Li Huishu, a dancing teacher at the China Central University for Nationalities. This time, ticket sales so far have not been satisfactory, said Li Yusheng, who attributed the situation to insufficient market promotion. But Yang Xumei, a ticket agent for the event, is confident about the earnings of the ethnic minority art shows on the premise of increased commercial advertising and related exploitation efforts.
