National Games Torch Arrives at Hong Kong

The Ninth National Games torch has arrived at Hong Kong on Sunday and raised the curtain of the forty-two-day torch relay in Hong Kong.

The Secretary for Home Affairs Lam Woon-Kwong said Hong Kong will feature about 150 athletes in the finals of the Games during the welcoming ceremony for the torch at the piazza of the Hong Kong Cultural Cent.

Together with Timothy Fok Tsun-Ting, chairman of the Organizing Committee for the Preparation of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Delegation to the Ninth National Games, Lam lit the cauldron at the Hong Kong Cultural Center.

"I believe today's torch will fuel the competitive spirit of Hong Kong athletes and inspire them to do their best in the upcoming National Games," Lam said.

"I hope the flame will attract Hong Kong people's interests in sports and encourage our athletes to make further breakthrough in the Games," Fok said.

Carrying the torch, local athletes paraded from Hung Hom Railway Station to the Hong Kong Cultural Center.

At the ceremony, Lam and Fok also activated a clock counting down towards the opening of the Games in Guangzhou.

The torch, which was lit from the Torch Lighting Ceremony held in Beijing on September 11, will be shown at the Wan Chai Sports Ground, Guangzhou, fourteen days ahead of the opening of the Ninth National Games on November 11.
