HK Launches Broadband Traffic Video Service

As part of the effort to enhance government services provided through the Internet, a broadband traffic video service has been launched by the Hong Kong SAR government Saturday to complement the current road traffic information services which show only still images of road traffic conditions.

The broadband version provides streaming video of road traffic conditions of selected key areas on Hong Kong Island, in Kowloon, Tsuen Wan and along the Tuen Mun Road. The content of the webcast is the same as that available to the two television stations but the service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week on the Internet.

"We envisage that with more and more people having broadband access to the Internet, they will find this new service a big improvement over the still-image version," a spokesman for the Information Technology and Broadcasting Bureau said.

The new video service can support up to 1,000 simultaneous users. In order to enable viewers a fair access to the service, the viewing time will be limited to five minutes per viewer.
