Twenty-story Building Demolished in Beijing

A twenty-story residential building was demolished midnight Saturday for the construction of a communication hub in eastern Beijing, and no injury was reported during the blasting operation, police said Sunday.

The 62.2-meter-high building, built in 1986, has over 100 apartments. With the inside and outside walls as thick as 20 centimeters and 30 centimeters respectively, about 510 kg of explosives were used to pull down the Y-shaped tower building.

It was believed to be the highest building that required the most complex demolition techniques ever applied in China, said a Beijing-based demolition firm.

The building was located in the main thoroughfare in the eastern district of Beijing, with railway stations, bus stops and other high-rises standing nearby.

The building is demolished to make room for a modern communication hub according to an urban development plan.
