Arabs Express Support for US Fight Against Terrorism

Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa said on Saturday that Arab countries side with the United States in its fight against terrorism.

"The Arab nations stand with the US against international terrorism. This is a clear stance," Moussa said in an interview with the US television network CNN.

But he stopped short of promising support for any military actions.

"We understand US President George W. Bush's resolve that the attackers on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon should not go unpunished," Moussa said.

He also echoed US Secretary of State Colin Powell in having defined the war against terrorism as "not necessarily military, but also economic, diplomatic, political and financial."

"I think such a kind of definition is very important and we are ready to cooperate after consultations on what will be the action to come," Moussa said.

He stressed that he was in favour of cutting off financial support to terrorist groups.

On Thursday, the pan-Arab forum called on the US to ensure "no harm" to Arabs and Muslims living in the US as suspicions were pointing to Islamic militants after Tuesday's anti-US attacks.
