Number of Filipino Child Abuse Victims Rises

Philippine Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon Soliman Friday said the number of child abuse victims increased in the first half of this year.

Malaya newspaper quoted Soliman as saying that 7,424 were reported during the first half of the year alone, compared to a total of 11,045 for the whole 2000.

Of the total during the first half of this year, Soliman said,1, 810 involved rape, 1,228 incest, and 375 acts of lasciviousness.

The social welfare department, in an attempt to address the issue of child abuse, has created a three-stage project to help victims cope with the problem. The project includes rehabilitative services, protective custody and after care.
